Purpose of the project

Organization of conference on SD

To approach the emergent need of starting a sustainable and long-term partnership of public-private actors in Albania, to be in the same line with the international institutions' goal for achieving sustainability in the global economy.
It’s specific aim is to introduce the opportunities and best practices of the Southern Region, Albania to implement sustainable tourism, as an example in the country and beyond, in the Balkan region, in the achievement of SDG.

Short Description

United Nations for World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) certified InSET, as a CSO operating in National and Regional level, with a focus both in sustainable development proposes to organize First Conference on Sustainable Development on Albania, 24th November 2017, for the International Year of Sustainable Tourism. Aim of the conference “Building Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Tourism Development” was to approach the emergent need of starting a sustainable and long-term partnership of public-private actors in Albania, to be in the same line with the international institutions' goal for achieving sustainability in the global economy.
It’s specific aim is to introduce the opportunities and best practices of the Southern Region, Albania to implement sustainable tourism, as an example in the country and beyond, in the Balkan region, in the achievement of SDG. The Conference brought together the various stakeholders/actors of the southern region of Albania in the tourism sector especially for the purpose of sustainable tourism development: policymakers, universities, tour operators and private business in Tourism and International NGOs.





Activities


  • Lead partner (organizer of the conference):
    InSET, Institute for Sustanaible Development, Environment and Tourism
    • Collaborated with Ministry of Tourism and Regional Development Agency RDA 4 Albanian public body established with the Council of Ministers Decision No 961/02/12/2015 within the context of the new Albanian governmental policies for the regional development. Common goals between InSET and RDA 4, in the framework of IY ST4D are :

      -Creation and setting-up of models of public - private partnership for common development interests.
      -Encourage a much broader pattern of cooperation and promotion of regional and interregional partnerships;


    • Organization of the conference


    • Raised partnership for the conference with following institutions:

      -Municipality of Vlora
      -Ministry of Tourism and Environment
      -NGO’s
      -Tourism operator’s Association representatives in Vlora and Tirana.
      -National and International foundation operating in Tourism Sector Municipality of Vlora
      -Municipality of Himara
      -Municipality of Gjirokastra
      -University of Vlora.

    • Is organizing the first conference:

      “Building Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Tourism Development"

      •Location: Vlora Municipality - one of the main municipalities of the Southern Region with strong tourism orientation of different types for sustainability.


  • Main themes:

    Discussions are thought to be focused on the following but not limited to:
    Alternative forms of tourism as a source of economic growth and social inclusion
    How can economic growth be achieved through alternative forms of sustainable tourism?
    How to involve different social groups in alternative forms of tourism
    Massive and Alternative Tourism – can they both be Sustainable?
    Natural tourism / ecotourism - how can these forms be used as sustainable alternatives to economic development
    Employment in the region - Does it depend on diversification in the tourism sector?
    Heritage Tourism: Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Values, Diversity and Heritage"
    How can we develop tourism in heritage sites and protect heritage at the same time?
    Natural heritage - the risk of reducing the environment by increasing tourism flows
    Encouraging cultural values for international tourists - the balance between increasing tourism flows and conservation
    Tourism and climate change, how conscious are the structures in Albania for their impact on these aspects



  • Project future

    The partners are planning to organize the conference each consecutive year in the framework of SDG achievement, trying continually to:

    • Bring together the various stakeholders / actors of the southern region of Albania in the tourism sector especially for the purpose of sustainable tourism development;

    • Raise awareness among all stakeholders that sustainable, accessible and responsible tourism is realized by working together, that this tourism model is a way of achieving development;
    • Encourage professional discussions on sustainable tourism (alternative and / or massive forms, heritage and sustainable tourism)
    • Increase SDG knowledge within the private sector, as there is clearly a lack of knowledge of this sector, which will promote sustainable practices and services in tourism enterprises in the region;
    • Raise awareness of communities about their potential and their way of working, thus beginning a new path of development in tourism: keeping in touch with the right skills through sustainable tourism.
